Group name:

Runaway Bay BeachCare

Size of group:

Average participants 10

Location:

Constance Esplanade, Runaway Bay

Description of area:

The foredunes at Runaway Bay are low and narrow, directly in front of a car park and residential properties and adjacent to a boat access ramp. The dune suffers from boat wake induced erosion, trampling, weed encroachment, intentional damage to trees and it also acts as a litter catchment. The numerous low-lying native species and weeding efforts are clearly direct results of community involvement through the GCCM BeachCare Program.

Objectives:

The community group aims to maintain their foredunes and prevent erosion from wind surges and boat/wave breaks. To achieve this they also increase the biodiversity assets of the local area and local amenity.

History:

After council initiated community engagement in Runaway Bay, there was strong community support to start a community dune care group on Constance Esplanade in 2006. BeachCare took a proactive response and facilitated a community group which runs quarterly each year.
