Group name:
North Kirra Beach BeachCare
Size of group:
Average 10 participants
Location:
The foredunes from the roundabout at Musgrave St and Pacific Parade, just south of North Kirra SLSC, North Kirra.
Description of area:
The dunes at this site are wide and have the potential to be active and healthy dune systems. The biggest problem for this dune is the severe weeds that are smothering the remaining natives. There were a few birds (butcher birds, magpies, blue-faced honey eaters), and butterflies, which indicates it could be critical habitat to many species in the present and the future.
Objectives:
To improve the health and biodiversity assets of the foredunes, as well as engage community members about the importance of dune vegetation.
History:
As vandalism to native dune species, particularly Casuarina equisetifolia var. incana (Coastal She-oak) has occurred since 2005, a community dune care group was established under the guidance of local Councillor Chris Robbins in 2006. This was to encourage community participation and increase awareness of the importance of dunes and dune vegetation. BeachCare has run North Kirra community planting and weeding days ever since, approximately once every 6 weeks.
Other information:
Everyone is always welcome to come along to BeachCare community days; no experience necessary, all ages and fitness, bring along a hat, wear sunscreen, all equipment and refreshments are supplied.
